NK Varaždin played their first match of the Conference League second qualifying round against Czech side Jablonec on Thursday, but just two days before that, an unexpected announcement shook the club. Oliver Zelenika, the team’s long-serving captain and first-choice goalkeeper, has requested a transfer and will now be benched as a result.
What happened?
Manager and sporting director Nikola Šafarić revealed Zelenika’s transfer request during an appearance on Sport Klub. Despite being a key figure in the squad, Zelenika’s decision to leave has forced a reshuffle in goal. Šafarić confirmed he had spoken to both goalkeepers, Zelenika and Josip Silić, and made the club’s stance clear.

Zelenika has lost his starting spot due to his request. Šafarić explained that Silić will step in as first-choice goalkeeper if Zelenika fails to secure a new club. There are currently no concrete offers on the table, but the club is open to selling. If Zelenika stays, the goalkeeper situation will be revisited.
Silić, older brother of Hajduk Split goalkeeper Toni Silić, already impressed late last season. He stood out with strong performances in the derby at Poljud, and his form could prove crucial in the Conference League run.
